Welcome to the website of San Francisco DJ Jeff Stallings, resident DJ on Energy 92.7FM's Sunday night down-tempo show Below Zero. Click on BELOW ZERO to find out more about the coolest chillout and downtempo radio show south of the North Pole and to download a podcast of the latest program.
A special thanks to everyone who attended California Academy of Sciences' NightLife on April 16. This was truly one of my most fun gigs ever and I'm scheduled again for August 6, so stay tuned. I have also played San Francisco's Harlot, Mezzanine, Club 1015 and the Slanted Door, as well as various venues in Los Angeles.
If you're familiar with the CD releases of Buddha-Bar (DJ Claude Challe), Hotel Costes (DJ Stephane Pompougnac) or the Supperclub (DJ Michael Anthony), you'll know where I get my inspiration. Check out an article about me in San Francisco's Bay Area Reporter then click on MUSIC to listen to some recent mixes.
The terms applied to the tracks I mix in clubs and at events—Balearic beat, chillout, down-tempo, nu-jazz and electronic lounge on the slower side; chillhouse, deep house and intelligent drum and bass (IDB) on the faster side—encompass a wide range of tempos and sounds, all meant to set a sexy mood for crowds of people having a great time.
Check out my current blog on the Below Zero website while listening to some of my recent sets using the MUSIC link above. Let me know what you think!
Music has always been in my blood and an important part of my life. My parents sent me to a piano teacher when, at only 6 years old, I could pick out tunes by ear on our old upright. But I quickly tired of the regimentation of formal instruction and moved on to other interests.
During the 1980s I started going to clubs in New York where the hardcore dancers arrived late to hear the sexy atmospheric grooves that DJs played well after sunrise. It was awe-inspiring to hear these often ethereal and always sexy songs mixed flawlessly on vinyl by extraordinarily talented DJs.
My interest in this “chillout” music bloomed in 2000 when a friend gave me a copy of a CD put out by Buddha-Bar in Paris, a club acclaimed for cutting edge grooves in a sophisticated atmosphere. I was hooked and started collecting this genre of music from all over the world.
I now have thousands of tracks that range from smooth down-tempo (80-110 beats per minute, or BPM) to a still smooth but energetic 140 BPM (what I call "chillhouse"). I can play entire sets of Latin-infused chill; darker, more soulful chill; faster, definitely danceable chill; happy-people party chill; and anything in between.
Some of my favorite artists include Urban Myth Club, Goloka, Alpha X, Ganga, Late Night Sneaky, Tosca, Cantoma, Chris Coco, Afterlife, Blank & Jones, Bliss, De-Phazz, Gotan Project, Radar, Schiller, Slackwax, Thievery Corporation, Waldeck and Zero 7. These groups define the contemporary down-tempo sound; I encourage you to buy some of their CDs.

What the hell is a snuggythugg anyway?
A few years back my partner Jim Winters and I were joking around about contemporary DJ names and decided to create an alter ego for me. A quick look at popular DJ names revealed that many implied toughness or streetwise gangsterism:
We coined the name “Snuggythugg” to convey that the music I mix is utterly, universally listenable (the “snuggy” part) while also being edgy, tough and sexy (the “thugg” part). The extra “g” is pure symmetry.
I use Snuggythugg primarily as the goofy name of this website. At clubs and events I prefer to be billed as DJ Jeff Stallings. But call out "Hey Snuggy!" on the street and I will likely answer "YO!", because that's the way DJs talk, you know.
New on Radio Snuggythugg: Below Zero radio sets from April 12 and May 31, 2009!
The music I mix generally falls within the realm of chill, but this ranges from down-tempo for dining to chillhouse for dancing the night away. My mission is to have a blast while you have a party, with music and mixes to keep you on your toes. Literally.
Listen for yourself: In the player above are mixes that correspond to the beats-per-minute described below as well as recent sets from Energy 92.7FM's Below Zero.
